Think throngs of sexy, sweaty women looking for a spiritual sugar daddy.

That’s one way to look at yoga. Nothing wrong with that.

“All you have to be is yourself and you get a lot more sex. Actually, [intercourse] turns into something you no longer try to get. It becomes a big part of your lifestyle,” says Charles Matkin, who runs Matkin Yoga in New York.

At a yoga class, you’ll hear sweet utterances like, “Take your shoes off and unwind” and “Let your gut go soft” (a relaxed belly bump means you are balanced). Don’t you wish you discovered this stuff called yoga in college?

The ancient science is akin to a dual degree in physiology and philosophy. Applied to your sex life, a little practice can turn you into a guru of pleasure. It can help with flexibility, improve your staying power, delay ejaculation, and bring you more in sync with your partner.

So what is holding you back from peaking in bed?

“You won’t see many guys in yoga because they don’t feel comfortable letting go of control. They want to be macho and punch things,” says Matkin, who, with his wife, Lisa, has developed therapeutic yoga programs for leading medical centers, including Beth Israel Hospital and New York Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City.

Matkin says his prudish upbringing required years to undo as he worked on developing a healthy approach to sexuality. “Sex is primal. You have to be okay with being dominant and submissive.”

Matkin says men’s abilities in bed are also limited by back pain and overall muscle tension—two other problems yoga addresses.

On the following pages, Matkin offers three poses that will unleash the sex guru in you by freeing you from the pressure of performance and limbering you up for some old fashion love. Ten minutes a day of these poses is even better than one class each week.

Horndog Pose

Release your aching back for better sex

“Testosterone doesn’t make you smarter; it actually makes you dumber,” says Matkin, who wants to reassure men that sex is practice, not a performance. His wife makes him feel better by telling him “[orgasm] is the overrated part.”

This pose is a play on Downward Facing Dog, a pose you’ll meet in any class you attend.

Take a yoga strap (or belt or tie) and create a loop in the bottom and tie it to the doorknob. Stand facing away from the closed door and lay the strap across the middle of your thighs. Tie the other end to the doorknob so that you are able to fold forward at the waist feeling the pressure on your thighs pulling you towards the door as you swim forward, walking your hands along the ground if possible.

Imagine a woman in your life pulling your thighs back. This is a common assist for the muscle-bound in a hands-on yoga class. Hold for 10 breaths.
